I Love Do-Gooding Celebs…I Hate Celebs Who Do No Good

April 21, 2010

If you have the money and the means, then obviously it is easier to do things for others. Those of us who work full-time jobs and have full-time families do find it more difficult to get out and volunteer or to donate money. I find it easier for myself to give household goods I am replacing and non-perishable items to the local food bank. It is also easier for us to not make craptacular spectacles ourselves.

I love celebrities who do good work for other people. That they not only find the time in their busy lives, to help others by donating their time and money to helping, but they bring things to light that we may not see otherwise. Because they are busy people-we just don’t get to see it in the gossip magazines. Some celebrities go to places of destruction, some help animals and others help the environment. Here are my top helpers, doing good in different and positive ways.

I love Angelina Jolie-of course she is the most talked about and well-known celeb who is a do-gooder. Angelina began her stint as the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in August 2001. Since she started she has brought to light the need to help the refugees in Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Namibia, Cambodia, Pakistan, Thailand and Ecuador. Most recently she visited the people in Bosnia and Herzegovina who were displaced during the war in the 1990’s. I think with all the good this woman puts in to her charity work, we can look past or even forget the weirdness of her twenties. Not only does she help others what seems like religiously, she makes a point to adopt children that would not have had the opportunities they will now have.

I love Rachel McAdams, she is probably not as well known as other actresses, but I love her movies. She picks roles that are true to herself and her fans. She does not go out of her way to make a public nuisance of herself, or make scenes in front of paparazzi. She also is a closet tree-hugger. She and two friends started the online blog Green is Sexy which gives advice on how to help mother earth, while being real about it. They give “green” tips for entertaining, yard & garden, workplace and money savers. Good job girls, I would never have known about this great site if it hadn’t been for Rachel being in a Marie Claire blurb.

I love that Katherine Heigl has used her celeb status to help animals. Other celebs have done this also, but she is one classy actress. She and her mother created Heigl Hounds of Hope, which operates as part of the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation-the foundation was started in honor of her brother who died at age 16. The Heigl Hounds of Hope rescues large dogs with behavior problems from shelters with high kill records and rehabilitates them. With all her good animal work it is no wonder she received the ASPCA Presidential Service Award for her efforts to promote animal rights. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is a not-for-profit organization that has been championing the belief that animals deserve kind, respectful treatment and protection under the law since 1866.

I also love Salma Hayek. Not only is this woman beautiful but she has a big heart as well. She decided to use her celeb status and became spokesperson for the Pampers “One Pack=One Vaccine” campaign to support UNICEF’s initiative to stamp out tetanus by 2012. On a humanitarian trip last year to Sierra Leone, she took in the affects that tetanus has on people who don’t have the medical care that we have. While on this trip she decided to take it upon herself to help a starving infant and breastfed him. She caught a lot of flak for this, but good for her to not only be there to see the influence of a treatable disease but to personally help a child in need.

Nicole Richie has made the turn for the better; someone who was ridiculed for her obnoxiousness and drug-addict behavior to a woman and mother that we can look up to. After changing her ways and having two children she has started her own fashion lines-House of Harlow 1960 & Winter Kate-and she and her boyfriend Joel Madden created “The Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation” in November 2007. In February 2010 they opened a playground in Los Angeles to encourage children to get outside and play. How cool is that, starting a foundation dedicated to benefiting children.

I hate celebrities that do no good for anyone. When you have the money, you have the resources and channels that regular people do not have. I am not saying every celeb needs to go out and start a foundation for something or become a liaison for some company, but jeez do something with yourself. Do not go to jail, do not go to clubs where you will just have crappy photos taken, do not go shopping and spend ridiculous amounts of money on items you will only where once. Grr. Here are a few of my top celebs that should, and need, to be doing more with themselves.

I could keep this list going, but I feel at this point with Earth Day upon us that our recognition should go to those who are doing wonderful things for others. Thanks ladies.

I hate Lindsay Lohan. Not only has this girl taken a twirling dive down the toilet in popularity, but she is a drunken mess. Rehab did not help this star, who came back and immediately went back to her old, hard-partying ways. Her parents sure don’t take any responsibility by her; her mom enables her and parties with her. Lindsay grew up before our eyes in Disney movies, and took a very quick journey down into the dumps. If she could pull herself together, even for a moment, and help other people instead of making crappy movies that no one wants to see, she would immediately bring her celebrity status back up to where she should be. Before the excess got her, she seemed like a normal, sensible person-I wish she could see the light and return to that.

I hate Paris Hilton. The rest of her family has it all together, but this socialite just can’t get it going for herself. She is an heiress to a wonderful hotel chain and fortune but spends way too much time partying and messing around than doing anything for anyone else. She thinks that going out and being a party-hardy, drunkard is what is best to keep her in the lime-light. Well, it isn’t. I am so sick and tired of this girl getting in the tabloids for all of her drama, when she has the money and the means to do so much with herself and the public. She loves animals-she carries around a chinchilla-why not become involved with animal safety? Get over yourself Paris; it is time to grow up.
